The AI disclosure debate on Steam is getting weird again. Epic’s Tim Sweeney has called Steam’s AI label “really irresponsible.“ But the player data tells a more complicated story.

Player version is real, but not totally dominant

GameDiscoverCo surveyed roughly 3,800 Steam users in July 2026. About 43% said generative AI is “not a concern” or “not a dealbreaker.” Around 31% were actively put off, and only 8% would refuse to buy under any circumstances.

So what cost is there to disclosure?

Game Oracle analyzed nearly 10,000 commercial Steam games. After controlling for developer experience, publisher backing, genre, and timing, games that disclosed AI use averaged 52.6% fewer first-month reviews than non-disclosing games.

The key word is “disclosure.” Steam’s rules only cover what players can see or hear, art, voice acting, localization, narrative text. Use AI for code or concept sketches and no disclosure is required. So that gap comes almost entirely from AI players can actually perceive. You can often tell when a character avatar was pumped out of an image generator, but not so simple when it comes to the game engine and underlying code. What players object to

Of roughly 2,100 free responses in the survey, 51% said they accept AI “conditionally.” The most tolerated uses: code assistance, placeholder art, and repetitive-task automation. Hand-drawn character art, voice acting, and narrative writing drew the strongest opposition.

Players don’t necessarily object to AI tools. They object to being brushed off with boilerplate text. Notably, AI games that sell relatively well tend to emphasize that “generated content was reviewed and modified by humans.” Those that just write “uses AI-generated art” perform worse.

The potential chilling effect

Games lawyer Haley MacClean says every client contract she handles now bans generative AI. “It’s not worth the legal risk,” she says. Seems like quite the hairy legal mess right now accross the board, so it’s not shocking to hear lawyers in the industry and navigating it like Haley.

To buy, or not to buy

Are players more likely to buy a game with AI disclosure? No. But will they refuse a game they genuinely want because of it? The data says most won’t.

What’s actually happening is that AI disclosure is becoming a quality signal. Players treat it as a test of whether a studio is hiding something. Those who disclose candidly and emphasize human oversight survive. Those who keep it vague get tend to get punished.

One thing to point out: the 52.6% figure is a correlation, NOT a proven causation. The researcher behind it warned the gap can’t be chalked up solely to consumer resistance, AI adoption may correlate with cost-cutting that independently hurts quality in both the short and long term.
